Approachable environmentalism
Dictionary.com defines environmentalism as, “Advocacy for or work toward protecting the natural environment from destruction or pollution.” Logically, an environmentalist is, “an advocate of environmentalism.” Unfortunately in today’s world the environmentalist, or “tree-hugger,” has developed the reputation (or brand) of being a rigid, controlling, and rule-making individual determined to complicate all of our lives. Eco-fascists spiking trees and defacing Hummers make all environmentalists seem radical and angry. Nothing has been done to show that caring about your environment is not a side you must choose. It’s ok to care and you might even find there are others who appreciate your attempts.
Seekingunity is a web site designed to give acknowledgement to those who think about and attempt to address their environmental impact. If your business has considered and developed what we call a “Green Promise” we have something for you. At the very least we can offer you a little Search Engine Optimization (more on that below). We can also make your contact information available to individuals who are dedicated to doing business with those who care about our planet.
Here’s how it works:
- Submit your name to our free directory using the “Submit Your Business” link on the bottom of every page.
- Our team of volunteers verifies your link and Green Promise and places it into our directory.
- You get an email acknowledging your posting.
- Google’s search-bot crawls our site and sees your listing.
- You get one more integrity vote to help your Search engine ratings.
- Individuals interested in environmentally friendly companies search our directory (or Google) for you.
- It’s that simple.
So what is a green promise?
A green promise is, quite simply, a list of things your company does on a regular basis to minimize its impact on the environment. They can include purchasing recycled paper, recycling electronics, or any action that reuses resources. We aren’t picky about your practices. Our goal is to encourage you to think about your business’s impact and to take steps, no matter how small, to become more efficient.

Seekingunity.org is in beta test stage right now. Our directory is small and our scope is limited. We already have plans for more robust features, information and opportunities but for now we just want to start. Our mission is to bring environmentalism to everyone by creating a positive brand for environmentalists and by providing other incentives for being green. We are not-for-profit and a gift from Tanagram Partners to the world. We launched in April 2005 (Earth Month). Grow with us!
